Trading Words: I - P

  • Investment: The act of putting capital (i.e. money) to work in the expectation of making a profit in the future.

  • IPO: Initial Public Offering. When a new stock is added to the market, its shares are sold to traders through the IPO broker(s).

  • Issue: Concerning AllSportsMarket; it is tradable stock of a team or player.

  • Level II: Trading screen displaying quotes, bids and trades in real-time as it happens on an individual market.

  • Leverage: The act of borrowing money to increase the ability of making a greater return on an investment. Leverage is also commonly known as 'Gearing', particularly in Europe.

  • Long (Position): The act of buying shares with the intention of selling them later at a higher price.

  • Long Stock Value: The combined value of all long shares in your portfolio at their current price.

  • Long-term: A time period of typically greater than five years.
  • [Top]
  • Market Price: The current or last reported price at which a stock traded.
  • [Top]
  • Moving Average: A common way to smooth data on a chart sourced from historical data. An average can then be found over a time period (e.g. 30 days; i.e. a 30 day moving average) and the result can be plotted. Essentially you are finding the average, historical stock price over a period of time. The most common types of moving averages are the simple moving average (SMA and the volume weighted average price (VWAP).

  • Noise: Random variations in price and volume. Noise tends to becomes more noticeable when looking over a shorter time frame.

  • Open Order: An order that has been given to a broker to buy or sell stock but has not yet been completed, filled or cancelled.

  • Order Streamer: Live data on the Pro-Trade Screen that shows the most recent trading history of a given stock.

  • Plunder: When a team/player beats another team/player in a match-up, the winning team/player, takes (i.e. plunders) a percentage (currently 50%) of the loser's game pot.

  • Portfolio: The total sum of investments held by an individual or entity.

  • Position: To take a stand or interest in the market in the form of open contracts.
